2020 Ford Mustang

Back in January, Ford presented the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 as the most powerful street-legal car the Blue Oval automaker has ever made. At the time, however, we didn’t know the new GT500’s power output – until now.

Ford has finally confirmed the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 will produce a whopping 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. That makes it more powerful than the 650-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and 707 hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat but it falls short of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, which has 797 hp and 707 lb-ft on tap.

This setup enables the 2020 GT500 to hit 0-62 mph in around 3.5 seconds and do the quarter-mile in less than 11 seconds. Compared to its main rivals, the new GT500 has a slower top speed limited to 180 mph, whereas the ZL1 will top out at 190 mph and the Redeye goes all the way to 203 mph. This is likely due to the car’s aerodynamics, which is designed to produce as much downforce as possible.

All that power is sent through Ford’s new Tremac seven-speed dual-clutch transmission capable of shifts in under 100 milliseconds, which is the quickest-shifting transmission ever fitted to a Mustang and “markedly faster than any manual gearbox.”
